In our recent Book 5 study circle, we found discussion of the themes presented in Lessons 16 - 30 to be quite spiritually enriching. Each lesson's introduction is like a little gem and could easily be used as a deepening for adults, so our discussions gradually required more focused attention as to how we could convey these themes in ways understandable to 2nd graders. It also became clear that in order to teach the 2nd set of lessons to children, the participants must have advanced their skills in explaining the lesson themes, giving concrete examples of words and phrases from the quotations, and storytelling during their practice of the 1st set of lessons.

For the last 5 or 6 lessons, we practiced Book 5's exhortation to adapt the lessons to "the level of comprehension of their students," by giving various scenarios teachers might encounter. It was acknowledged that in many places, we won't always have a class of 20 2nd graders, so most of the scenarios were based on real-life children's class experiences. Other scenarios were like "thought experiments" to explore new possibilities. The exercise was well-received and allowed the participants to expand their thinking. The scenarios we used were:

  • Four brothers, ages 3 to 11, in a weekly neighborhood class
  • A 5 day neighborhood "Vacation Bahá'í School" meeting for 3 hours for children ages 7 to 10 years
  • Three junior youth meeting every other week for 2 to 3 hours in a home
  • Twenty 2nd and 3rd graders, a mix of Bahá'ís and non- Bahá'ís with sporadic attendance and frequent guests, at a Bahá'í school, meeting weekly for an hour
  • Fifteen children of various ages for whom English is a second language in a weekly neighborhood class of 1 ½ hours
  • A 2nd to 4th grade class of 12 children in a 5 day Bahá'í summer school
  • Two junior youth, 3 4th graders, and a 2nd grader at a weekly 2 hour neighborhood class
  • As part of the 2nd grade curriculum in a Bahá'í-run elementary school
