Courtesy of Nadia Milani Fifita, Papua New GuineaWe love to spend a lot of time playing games and socialising in our study circle and also, because most of our participants are English language learners, we need to spend a bit longer memorising the quotations. I have come up with a few games that assist in the process of memorising quotes and also increase the spirit of fellowship in the group.
Prepare ahead: Type out the quotes that you wish to memorise (or download them from this site). Cut the quotes into sections (one phrase on each section). These pieces become the playing cards. It's good to have at least five or six quotes or make multiple copies of one quote. The more cards you have, the better.
To Play:
1. Deal out a number of cards to each player (the number of cards depends on how many players you have and also how many cards you have). The remaining cards go face down on the table/floor and become the pick-up pile.
2. Play starts by a player drawing a card from the pick-up pile (or the discarded pile) and finishes by discarding one unwanted card from your hand and placing it face up on the table/floor.
3. You have to sort the cards in your hand so as to see which cards are from the same quotation and go together. The aim of the game is to complete one quotation.
4. When one player has all the cards necessary to complete a quote, he or she lays the whole quote on the table and the game is over.
5. Even though only one quote is completed in the end, learning of all the quotes is inherent in the playing process.
