Courtesy of Hugh Chance RTI's Tutor TipsAn experiential learning "get out of your chair" activity to build group spirit and an appreciative atmosphere where participants share positive qualities about each other.
Purpose
To build group spirit and an appreciative atmosphere.
Materials
None
Time Period
10 minutes
Steps
Participants form two lines, facing each other. One by one, each participant walks slowly down the aisle with eyes closed (some gentle steering help sometimes needed). As this individual passes, the other participants whisper something positive or encouraging that they have noticed about that person. It can be something very simple, such as you are always smiling, to something deeper such as you are very courageous in times of tests. After going all the way through the walk, the participant takes a place at the end of one of the lines, and the next participant begins her/his Angel Walk. Continue until all of the participants have made their Angel Walk.
Notes
This wonderful exercise is a reflection of that well-known teaching of the beloved Master that if a person has ten bad qualities and one good, we should ignore the ten and concentrate on the one. It is a very uplifting process that demonstrates the power of appreciative thinking and encouragement.
Other Applications
Consider customizing the Angel Walk to a unit you are studying, focusing for example on something positive and encouraging related to "Teaching" or another topic in a Ruhi book.
