Project at a Children's Shelter

Submitted Saturday, April 8, 2006

An account by the tutor of a Study Circle in Tshwane, South Africa.

"I have been privileged to facilitate a Book 6 study circle consisting of 5 adults. These dedicated souls decided to initiate a service project and when they complete the book begin a short term teaching project. For the service project the participants decided to offer help to a shelter that is a home to 18 street children aged between 10 to 16 yrs. The group consulted on what it can offer and eventually decided to as an initial step meet the administrators of the shelter and the kids themselves so that they can learn from them how they can be served.

"The study group talked about their intention at a Feast and two youth volunteered to join the group. The first meeting with the kids was exciting and emotional. After an art performance of drama for the children by one of the members of the group we asked them how we can help them. The kids wanted as first priority someone to teach them and organize them into a football team. It was amazing that one of the Baha'i youth Johannes who was present is a football coach. He accepted to meet them once a week and organize a team that will in due course play against other kids of other shelters. The administrators also pledged that they will offer transport should traveling be required. The Boys also required someone to help them with their school studies.

"So far the group has visited the boys several times. Johannes is continuing with coaching them football. They are happy and when we go there they run to our cars and our bond of friendship and trust has strengthed. It has been agreed that after every football exercise the boys will attend a class to learn prayers and some lessons from the junior youth books "Walking the Straight Path" The service project has brought a special bond between the members of the group who have found a practical way to offer their love for our most unfortunate members of our society. It has also demonstrated the wisdom of having group studies that combines action and learning.'.

"To my dear colleagues who are tutors, please encourage your study circle to implement other elements of the Study Circle and see for yourself the changes it brings to the group and the community."
