Hosting a Feast

Here are some thoughts on service from one tutor. "The group decided to serve the community by hosting a Feast. It was a beautiful Feast and a real sense of service and joy pervaded the study circle group.

The devotions comprised all nineteen quotations in the first unit of "Reflections on the Life of the Spirit". Each person said two quotations from memory, and despite their nervousness, they all did brilliantly. Although this service may seem small, it was a major step for many of the group - some had never read at a Feast, let alone said anything from memory. In addition, each week the group serve each other by taking turns to provide hospitality, do devotions etc.

Every few weeks, on special occasions such as Ayyam i Ha, Naw Ruz etc. the group has brought creative gifts for each other as a "guardian angel" for someone else. My reflection has lead me to believe that these seemingly small acts of service train the participants to adopt an ongoing "attitude of service" and are very significant. In other words, it's not the actual service done, but what qualities and attitudes are emerging. It seems to me that it is very important to measure "service" in terms of the capacity of the group, or the individuals in a group, at a particular stage of their journey along the spiritual path. Any attempts to hurry or pressure people into service may possibly have an negative effect."
