Purpose

An arts activity using the Greatest Name symbol or other Baha'i symbol.

Materials

Sand of different colors (from a craft store)
Large container of Elmer's glue
Rectangular pieces of 1/2-inch thick particleboard (The pieces can be about 5" by 7" and be purchased from a building supply place like Lowes that sells wood and have them cut.)
Stencil of Greatest Name
Little paper or plastic cups to hold glue or colors of sand
11" by 14" sheets of paper
Brushes of different widths (small & medium)

Time Period

20-30 minutes

Steps

1. Dilute glue with about two tablespoons of water to a cup of glue.  Stir it up and pour some glue into little cups: one for each person. Put colored sand in small cups (one color per cup).
2. Stencil of the Greatest Name:  Start with a 5" x7" black & white version of the Greatest Name Ringstone Symbol.  Use a piece of thick white paper (so the stencil is reusable). Trace the symbol onto the thick paper by using carbon paper or a light table.  Use a very sharp artist's knife to cut out the symbol that you traced.
3. Use the cutout paper version of the Greatest Name to trace the symbol onto the piece of particleboard. Place a sheet of paper under each piece of particleboard.
4. Brush an area of the traced Greatest Name on the board with glue.  Scatter the color of sand you like over the glue until it is covered (it doesn't take much).  Gently shake off the excess sand onto the paper beneath.  (The excess can be captured, saved, and re-used.)
5. Brush the area outside the Greatest Name with a contrasting color until the whole board is covered.
6. Let it dry for 24 hours.

Other Applications

You can also undertake this project with other Baha'i symbols like the nine-pointed star, etc.
