Courtesy of Ruth & Hamilton Breton, USAConsider putting on this thought-provoking short play during Book 1, Unit 3. The play dramatizes the "four wives" of a King, each "wife" represents a different element of our lives.
In a Fresno, California, Study Circle, a participant played the king by putting on a child's Elmo blanket as his "royal robe" and used a paper crown and hockey stick scepter. The wives used varying degrees of scarves, from plain bandana to one for belly dancing to indicate their position. The "actors" just read the script. We've yet to find a group that didn't enjoy the play. The story has been around for a long time. We just wrote it in play form.
An exerpt from the play: "Our fourth wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die. Our third wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others. Our second wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. And our first wife is our Soul, often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the ego. However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go. So cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now! It is your greatest gift to offer the world."
