Memorize 2.2
User's Guide (for 2.0, 2.2 coming shortly)
Memorize comes packaged with all the quotes for all seven Ruhi books (plus as an added bonus both Persian and Arabic Hidden Words). Using drop-down pick-lists, the book being studied is selected, and from that the passage to be memorized. As the student (I know, but "student" is easier to spell than "collaborator") progresses, Memorize blanks random words, which the student provides from memory while reading the passage aloud. The higher the level, the more words are blanked, until at Level 10 the entire passage is blanked out and the student must recite it entirely from memory.
Open Source code! After considerable debate and reflection, and requests from Ruhi collaborators around the world for foreign-language translations (now including Russian and Chinese) of my program, I have decided to release the current version Memorize 2.2 as OPEN SOURCE. This means, I am freely making available to anyone who wants it the original SOURCE CODE and support files for Memorize written for the Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 Professional compiler, in hopes that someone out there more knowledgable with modern programming standards and languages, and has more time than I, can carry on developing this useful tool into the next 5-year Plan. All I ask is that I be credited as the original author, and that any future versions be available at no charge whatsoever to anyone requesting it. I will continue to maintain the "official" Memorize website (see link below). For more information and downloads, visit the Memorize website.
New version 2.2! New features of this version include support for custom True-Type fonts that support non-latin alphabets (eg Cyrillic or Greek) on unicode-deficient systems; use of a user-specified text editor, such as Windows Notepad, for creating and editing books of passages; a browser tool to import books or background pictures; copy book files to the Memorize folder; select solid background color as well as pictures; rewritten Help file; more compact setup file for easier download on slower internet connections; and more.
There are helpful aids selectable, such as indicating the number of letters in each word, showing the first letter of each word, momentarily reviewing the entire quote, and saving the selected quote in a special file for easy retrieval at a later time. And Memorize is expandable, so new Ruhi books or the student's own selections may be added as they become available.
Memorize is offered free of charge to anyone wishing to benefit from this program, whether for Ruhi memorization or other studies. It also comes packaged with all passages from all 7 Ruhi books (others to be added as they become available), the Arabic and Persian Hidden Words, plus 7 sample background images, and a User's Guide in .pdf format. A CD-Rom version is available for $5.50 (covers material and postage only); email daduncan@gmail.com for details. Memorize occupies 2.55MB of hard disk space, requires 16M memory, and has been tested on Windows 95, 98SE, 2000 and XL.
